Marine Dynamics Tourism Hub

The Great White House serves as our meeting point where you will be warmly welcomed and served breakfast or lunch, whilst finalising checking in (if you haven’t already done this online). Here you can browse our curio shop and enjoy a cup of coffee to get the adrenaline going whilst we play our detailed safety briefing. We will also be returning here after the trip for a debrief and our delicious soup.

Attention to Detail

We provide a life jacket and a weatherproof jacket which you will receive prior to the short walk to the harbour, and you are assigned a dedicated bag with your wetsuit and booties. Our experienced skipper will ensure you are prepared for the conditions on the day, and you can rest assured that our crew, our volunteers, and your dedicated marine biologist have all the details covered - even snacks and hot chocolate are available on board our spacious and comfortable boats.

Itinerary for the day/trip

Meet at the Great White House in Kleinbaai for breakfast or lunch depending on your trip time. It is here that you will meet your marine biologist, register your wetsuit size, receive a pre-trip safety briefing and what to expect when out on sea, and get an overview of the shark species you may see. Once you have your life jacket on, we take a 200m stroll down to the harbour to board our vessel. Did you know? We have an online registration platform so you can check in and log your wetsuit size prior to arrival. A link will be sent to you once we have confirmed the departure time. Check in, payment, and signing of the indemnity form are mandatory for tour participation.

Boat ride out and back

Travel time to Dyer Island is approximately 20 minutes, with the shallows being a short 10-minute ride (where we anchor depends on where the sharks are). Wetsuits are handed out on board.

What you will see/experience

We have various species of sharks that visit the boats. Bronze whaler sharks, great white sharks, and possibly even Broadnose sevengill sharks. We are also often visited by stingrays, and you may see other marine species on the way to and from the dive site. Bronze whaler sharks grow up to 3,3m (10ft) and are very active around the boats. Great white sharks are a more solitary species, and we see sharks from 2m (6ft) to over 5m (16ft). Note that whilst we know the best places to view these sharks, we are working with wildlife and sightings can vary.

Cage time - Shark viewing/engagement

On average, we anchor for 2 to 3 hours, but this depends on shark activity, sea and weather conditions, as well as number of divers. We don’t time exactly how long you stay in the cage, but aim to give everybody the same experience, so your time is completely dependent on the shark activity for the day. We don’t use scuba or snorkel in the cage as it is always above the water. Pay attention to the bait handler who will advise from which side the shark is approaching and he will tell you to go down left or down right. Take a big lung full of air and then get below the water with the sharks. We work from both sides of the cage so everyone can enjoy the shark experience.

Boat viewing

If you are not fond of the water and don’t see yourself getting in the cage, you can still enjoy views from the deck. We have a few deck positions that offer incredible views and opportunities to get some great photographs. We’ll take a wetsuit along in case you decide you want to get a closer look.

Chumming explained

White sharks are almost impossible to see without attracting their attention. The method we use to attract sharks to our vessel is by using a mixture of fish oils or fish by products, known as chum. This is mixed with sea water and then put back into the ocean. This produces a scent trail extending from our boat that sharks in the area pick up on and will then start to approach. Our chum is premixed to ensure it is not too offensive to our guests. Once the sharks are around the boat, we use a bait or decoy to keep the shark’s attention. Please note there is no feeding of sharks. Provisioning or feeding of white sharks has never been permitted within the code of conduct for South African white shark diving activities. There are many natural sources of chum in the ocean – such as that which comes from seal colonies or dead animals (particularly whales) that are the strongest in scent. When doing research scientists also use chum to bring sharks close to vessels to view or to tag.

Educational and informative - marine biologist on board

Our trips are fun and educational with our onboard marine biologist sharing knowledge about sharks that will entertain and inspire you. Learn about our research and what it means for the conservation of sharks in South Africa. You will notice them taking fin identification photos, and other data. This is added to our extensive database and contributes to our scientific studies on white sharks. They also do a daily blog that sums up the shark trip - this is where we share our favourite images.

Capturing the memories

We have a dedicated videographer who will capture all the moments of the trip for everyone to enjoy. We will show you the footage at the debriefing and it is available for purchase. This will be sent to you in the form of a link from which you can download and use on your social channels.

Return to shore

Weather and time permitting, we might take a quick trip through the famous Shark Alley on the way back. Once on shore, we have a debrief in the Great White House with soup and bread to warm you up. We will show you the footage of your trip and you can arrange to purchase if you wish. Cash showers are available to freshen up before departing on your next adventure. If you are on our transfer service, we may make a stop at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary on the way home, if you didn’t already pop in on arrival.
